Plasterboard can be incredibly useful in the construction of interior walls as it not only provides you with a flat, smooth surface to paint on, but it can also be a good way to insulate your home.
How is it made?
Put simply, plasterboard is a layer of hardened plastic pressed between two layers of paper, and then dried using a kiln. It is a relatively new process which can make finishing interior walls cheaper and easier.
Types of plasterboard
There are many different types of plasterboard, and some of them are specially designed for certain rooms or for particular purposes.
- Standard plasterboard - This is your basic plasterboard, used to line ceilings and stud partitioning.
- Insulated plasterboard - This gives you a little bit extra than the standard version, as it usually comes with a layer of insulating foam to resist heat transfer in your home.
- Fire-resistant plasterboard - Due to the nature of the material, plasterboard already offers you some fire proofing, but this type has an enhanced fire barrier effect.
- Moisture-resistant plasterboard - Good for use in bathrooms and wet rooms, moisture-resistant plasterboard uses metal foil, oil-based additives or other methods to repel moisture and reduce water vapour. You can even opt for moisture-resistant concrete plasterboard, which provides a perfect base for ceramic tiles.
- Sound proof plasterboard - This is specially designed using damping polymers to reduce the transmission of unwanted noise.
This brief explanation of each should help you to decide which one will be best for your home.
