For those of you not in the know, silicone sealant is a rubbery, watertight seal between your bath or shower and your bathroom wall. A common problem for most people occurs when the silicone starts to discolour over time due to dampness and mildew, and horrible black spots start to form. Most of us don't have a clue how to fix this, as cleaning never seems to work, but the following advice should help.

Replacing the silicone seal in a few carefully executed steps

Step 1: Preparation: You'll need to get hold of a tube of gun-applicated, anti-mildew silicone, and some silicone remover.

Step 2: Remove the existing silicone: Whatever you do, don't even consider applying new silicone on top of your existing stuff. Instead, use a sharp Stanley knife to cut the silicone away from the wall, and gently peel it all off. Any remaining can be tackled with a good silicone remover, which you leave on for 20 minutes and then wipe off. Make sure the surface is completely dry before continuing.

Step 3: Use masking tape to mask off the area above, and use your silicone tube to apply a straight line around your bath or shower. Don't worry if you get any on your ceramic tiles or floor tiling; any mishaps can be washed off later. Smooth the silicone down to a concave, sealed line. Allow to dry and pull of masking tape carefully.

And you're done. The only thing then left to do is to start enjoying your clean beautiful bathroom again!
