It's a debate which has rattled on for years. We're not talking the chicken and egg argument; we're talking ceramic vs porcelain.

There are plenty of people on both teams, but in recent years, ceramic tiles have started to gain in popularity.

In the past, ceramic tiles have been viewed as a poor substitute for porcelain tiles, but on closer inspection, the advantages of ceramic truly become apparent.

It has been said in the past that porcelain tiles are less likely to show up cracks and chips. But, in fact, this is not usually the case. Tiles of any sort will show cracks if they appear. The only way to get around this is by simply keeping spares.

It is true that porcelain is harder than ceramic, but all tiles are durable and likely to withstand heavy traffic. And if the worst comes to the worst, just dip into those spares.

When you tile your kitchen or bathroom, you tend to think that they will last forever. And it's true - sometimes they do. But that is not always the case. Spares are absolutely essential for those times when you're suffering with butter fingers and that can of beans just slips out of your hand and smashes onto the tile below.

So whether you choose ceramic or porcelain, just ensure that you order enough so that you have a few spares to play around with.
