In her recent blog Susie Steiner named this season's trend for the kitchen - 'vintage utility'. Vintage utility is all about clean whites and subtle greys, pastels, mis-matched, rustic and antique features as well as the home-made and the creative. Contrast this with a little harsh industrial lighting, some heavy duty flooring and a dash of chrome accessories and you're on your way. Its a fantastic juxtaposition of soft and harsh, delicate and tough - perfect for the modern kitchen, and the modern family.
The trend that encapsulates two things: 1) simplicity and 2) the home-made. The summer 2010 kitchen is a reflection on the previous year's ecomonic recession and a return to the make-do-and-mend ethos of the war years.
In these times of financial hardship, we're less likely to spend money on an entirely new kitchen or moving house. (Even some of Susie's suggestions for the vintage utility look were a little steep for our liking). As such, here are Builder Banter's suggestions for your summer 2010 kitchen:
Colour
The summer 2010 kitchen is all about neutrals and soft, subtle tones. A quick lick of paint can instantly transform a room, so why not consider painting the walls? Think whites, off-whites, soft greys or pastel blues. This clean look is very industrial, however mixed with a subtle grey or blue adds a vintage feel.
Tiles
White brick tiles are a perfect addition to the summer 2010 kitchen. Add them anywhere and everywhere (on the walls at least!). This will again add a utility feel, whilst the porcelain brings a delicate touch.
Flooring
Susie calls for you to rip up your flooring and expose the floorboards, however any savvy parent will know this isn't great for the kids. Instead, opt for a grey brush effect floor, which will have the same feel but will be a lot safer and durable.
Storage
Everyone knows that storage is key for a kitchen. To keep in with the minimalist theme, be sure to include many different storage options. Even better, get down to your local car boot sale, antique fair or charity shop and pick up some authentic treats. You can even paint straight over the top of them in a white paint to make them fit right in.
Accessories
Last but not least be sure to add some accessories to your kitchen. Make them individual to you and your family, whether it be some old unused jars and tins, a child's drawing or some home made cushions.
Remember you don't have to use all these options - you could just replace your tiles, or hand make some kitchen accessories. Updating your kitchen for summer 2010 is easy and cheap.
