Hi Pauline.
The grout lines are used as no tile will ever be exactly the same size, as part of the firing the tiles can slightly change shape, so the grout lines are used to take the eye away from the size difference. Usually the floor tiles are thicker and larger so the floor grout tiles are larger - 3mm. It's also not advised to butt tiles together as this could cause cracking. Porcelain are the best tiles if the customer wants closer grout lines as the sizing is more accurate and the tiles are very hardwearing. Hope this helps.
Best regards.
