An overview of the self-build process

Completing a successful self-build project can be a mammoth task. As well as being extremely time-consuming and a lot of hard work, you also need to be organised in order to keep on top of things. If you have no idea where to start, what order things need to be done in, and you need a concrete plan before you get started, the following overview of the self-build process should point you in the right direction.

1. Getting started - This can be one of the toughest parts of the whole process. You need to sort out your finances, set a realistic budget, buy a plot, apply for planning permission, set a start date, and hire builders and contractors. Being thorough at this stage will help you later on.

2. Choose a construction system - This is the internal skeleton the rest of your house is built around. Choose from masonry, timber frame or other building materials, but make sure you prioritise performance and strength.

3. Groundwork and foundation - Everything that goes on below ground level will provide a secure base for the rest of your project, so make it a priority.

6. Exteriors - Rendering and cladding have two purposes: to improve the external appearance of the house and to protect it against the elements.
