Choosing a colour scheme for your bathroom or kitchen tiles

Choosing a colour scheme for the tiling in your kitchen and bathroom can be extremely difficult, and is a decision that you should take some time over. Don't rush into anything and definitely don't choose colours on impulse, because you need to think about the appearance, impression of space and light, and statement your choice of colour is making.

In the kitchen

• Don't always go for block colours in your kitchen. Integrate patterns and mosaics into your ceramic tiles to make your kitchen appear more interesting and unique.

• A common mistake many people make is to match their wall tiles with their floor tiles and everything else in the kitchen. Instead, contrast your wall tiles with the countertops and choose darker colours for the floor tiles to make the space appear larger.

• You also need to pay attention the colour of the grouting . A contrasting colour from the ceramic tiles will make a striking visual effect, but be aware that any tiling or grouting mistakes, as well as dirt and food residue, will clearly show through.

In the bathroom

• You will always need to decide whether you want cool or warm colours for your bathroom. Choose cool if you have stainless steel, silver or chrome fittings, warm colours to match gold, brass or copper fittings, and neutral for painted, plastic coated or porcelain fittings.

• Bear in mind that although white wall and floor tiles are the most classic and neutral choices, they will show up dirt and mould extremely clearly - so may end up spending all your time cleaning them!
