There are a number of factors to bear in mind when choosing a type of tile for a particular space in your home. Obviously, you need to think about aesthetic aspects such as colour and design, but you also need to think about material, durability, and what tools and equipment you will need for installation.

There are many different varieties of tile, and if you are aware of the advantages and pitfalls of each, you’ll be able to make an informed decision.

Ceramic – Ceramic tiles are made from clay baked at very high temperatures, creating a very hard surface which is resistant to scratches, stains and burns. They are often glazed with a layer of liquid glass, or left natural for that rustic look. They are perfect for use in the kitchen and bathroom, as they are attractive and very easy to clean. Indoor use only.

Porcelain –These are similar to ceramic tiles but even more durable, so that frost-resistant varieties can even be used outside.

Glass -This type of tile is generally more expensive, but can look beautiful when used in mosaic sections or borders of wall or floor tiling. Although available in a wide range of colours, textures and sizes, it can however be very difficult to work with.

Travertine- These are tiles made of natural stone, meaning that each tile is unique. They can be used indoors and outdoors, but are available in only a limited range of colours.

There are many more types of tile to choose from, but these varieties are the most commonly used, and should be well within your budget. So, choose wisely and don’t make a mess of installing them, and you will get the perfect look for your home.
