Laying your garden paving

Unfortunately there is still plenty of work to do even once you have prepared your area for garden paving.

The laying of the paving is fairly straight forward, but there is a system so you can't simply throw the garden paving on the ground haphazardly and expect it to look good.

Start with full flags laid adjacent to a fixed point such as a boundary wall. This means you can work towards an edge. If you are laying your garden paving in a pattern such as a circle, it is always a good idea to place them in the right position first to ensure that you are happy with the shape and the way they are laid.

Now comes the scary bit, where you actually have to commit. The garden paving should be laid on a full mortar bed using wet mortar mix of five parts building sand to one part cement. Tap each of the paving stones down to the right level. Keep a piece of softwood between the hammer and the flag to ensure that the paving stays protected. Continue to check levels throughout the laying process and ensure that the spacing is correct too.
