Laying Your Garden Paving

When you've prepared the ground for your patio, it's time to actually start laying some paving slabs. Start in a corner and work your way across the area you've prepared. You should try to make sure that the spaces in between the slabs are nice and narrow. Get your rubber mallet out and give each slab a thump when you've placed it, making sure everything stays level as you're going.

You might need to take up a stone you've laid if it's higher or lower than the others, and fiddle with the levels of the sand underneath. When you need to cut a paving slab, mark the line that needs cutting with a pencil. Then you can score along this guideline with a brick set on both sides. One you've scored the flag it should break nice and easily along the line that you've drawn. Lay it on a flat surface and hit along the line with a small sledgehammer. Score more deeply if the paving slab stands firm.

Once you've finished your garden paving, then sweep more sand into the spaces in between the slabs and you can lay back and admire your handiwork. A good job all round.
