Museum’s ceramic tiles finally get the go-ahead

A museum in Bath has been given the green light to change the colour of their ceramic floor tiles.

Holburne museum's new extension has been at the centre of a planning struggle, after the architect requested that the floor tiles be a shade darker than had previously been agreed.

Planning permission for the extension was originally given on the premise that the colour of the tiles should be close to a Bath stone shade.

Alexander Sturgis, director of Holburne Museum said:

"I want to apologise for coming back to the committee for the fourth time.

"The simple reason for bringing this back to the committee is to try and make the building as good as it possibly can be.

"It would have been simpler to accept what has already been approved, but our aim is to ensure that what we know will be a wonderful resource for the city, will be as beautiful as it possibly can be."

The architect behind the extension, Eric Parry, requested the change as he felt that the darker colour of ceramic tiles would be more complementary to the surroundings, and many of the councillors agreed.

Councillor Colin Darracott said: "As I was walking around the site the darker one was, I think, not so stark and goes better with the building."

The ceramic tiles are sure to make a beautiful addition to the newly extended museum, and will make for a great day out for all the family.
