Planning to tile your floor

Just when you thought you were too old to be completing puzzles, you decide that you want to lay a tile floor.

But, as with that 1000 piece puzzle you completed when you were little, the key to laying floor tiles is careful planning.

First step is to calculate the size of the space you want to tile. Measure from one wall to the opposite wall and repeat with the two remaining walls. You need to multiply these two distances to get an area in square feet.

Of course, floor tiles can come in a number of different sizes so the number of tiles you need will depends upon the size you choose, but also the pattern that you opt for.

Once you have worked out exactly how many tiles you need, it is worth adding a few onto this number to ensure that you have spares should any break or be cut incorrectly.

Now comes the difficult bit because you have to choose a colour for your tiles. But this isn’t as easy as it sounds; because you need to also consider the grout. Grout is available in a number of colours and again, the one you choose is really a matter of taste and there is no right and wrong.

That’s all the decision making done. Now all that’s left to do is to complete that giant jigsaw. That’s your Sunday afternoon taken care of anyway.
