Spare a thought for the humble hedgehog

It appears that the massive influx of garden makeovers being enjoyed by more and more homeowners isn't suiting everyone, and it's a particular problem for hedgehog lovers.

Hedgehogs are getting an increasingly rough deal in suburban areas because of garden paving, garden fencing, decking and many other garden improvements. It has even been suggested that the placid, little critters will have disappeared from the UK completely within a couple of decades.

Experts are despondent that improvements in fencing and ground-covering techniques are shutting the hedgehogs out and depriving them of feeding areas. If that wasn't bad enough, the poor creatures are having to deal with a rising position on the food chain of foxes, who are finding less opportunity to scavenge after the introduction of wheelie bins. On top of that, hedgehogs still haven't quite got the hang of roads.

Homeowners are being asked to spare a thought for the animals we share our gardens with when drawing up new designs. Getting a bit creative with your DIY can help humans and hedgehogs live side-by-side in perfect harmony.

In return for a little access to potential feeding grounds like borders and lawns, hedgehogs are more than happy to scoff as many slugs and other pests as Mother Nature can throw at them.
