Splashback units, tiles and upstands

When preparing or cooking food, or cleaning dishes in a sink, there is always a worry about splattered items of residue on your kitchen walls. For this reason, a range of handy ‘splashback’ tiles, units and upstands have been made available to consumers.

Splashback tiles- Ceramic tiles are popularly used around kitchen and sink areas as they are hard wearing, resistant to water and easy to clean. They are also extremely attractive, and are available in a vast range of customisable patterns, styles, textures and colours to match any kitchen design scheme. Furthermore, you can opt for glossed or glazed tiles, or even stainless steel or chrome tiles for that reflective look.

Generally, they are placed as a trim on the wall above worktop areas, or in a central splashback area above cookers and sinks. They can be placed to cover the entire wall, but this can be considerably expensive and time-consuming.

Splashback units –These consist of one unbroken central piece on the wall above the hob. Granite, laminate and acrylics can all be used to make splashback units, but stainless steel and clear or coloured glass are the most common choices. These are easier to clean than ceramic tiles, as there are no joins for dirt or moisture to become trapped in.

Upstands – These are similar to splashback units and tiles, but work as a continuation of the worktop rather than a different material, colour or pattern.
