How much does it cost to build a cottage? £4,000 was the price one gentlemen paid for his cottage. This would not even pay to re-fit most people’s kitchen!

At a time when the housing market in Britain is struggling to make sales with the average house price remaining above £220,000, Mr James’ new home is bound to stand out from the crowd — and not just because he has a turf roof complete with flowers.

Mr James has recycled a fair few items for this “dirt” cheap house. He got his kitchen units from Glasgow Park, after re-using a cedar tree that had blown over. His ceiling is made from changing room doors from an old Victorian public bath. With all these cost savings made Mr James’ biggest expense was £600 to feed the willing volunteers that helped him. He insists that despite all of this the house is still watertight and warm.
